Excerpt from “In the Mirror”

Jasmine turned on the radio for what was going to be a long lonely ride home. Phyllis Hyman singing “What You Won’t Do For Love” trumpeted softly out of the speakers. She had driven a couple of blocks when she spotted Daniel in her rearview mirror, not st…alking, not hanging back trying not to be seen but staring at her, waiting for her to notice him.
Is he following me?
Yes!
What does he want?
You know what he wants.
But I can’t.
We’ve been through this already.
I know, and we’re going to keep on going through this because he’s still married.
So what?
So what! So what? I can’t commit adultery, that’s so what.
Adultery? What are you talkin about? Did you stand up in a church, in front of a preacher and a bunch of witnesses swearin to be faithful to somebody?
No, but . . . But what? What about his children?
He ain’t worried about ‘em. Why should you?
But it’s wrong.
Says who?
Candy.
She’s got her man.
My mother.
She’s got hers too.

My father.
Doesn’t have to know.

This song goes with the excerpt of In the Mirror posted below. Take a listen then a read.

Excerpt from “In the Mirror”

She heard Candy say her name, but Jasmine couldn‘t respond. She was tied up with some words in her mind, words that believed they had what it took to describe the attraction, the excitement, the enormous amount of . . . of . . . okay there‘s no other way to say this—sexual arousal that was rising in her like a balloon being pumped full of hot air. Standing in their dressed blues, words like “Wow!” “Whoah!” “Damn!”
“Um!” and “Ooooweeee!” (those were words, weren‘t they?) were waiting for Jasmine to choose them, but they were too plain, too cliché to do her feelings justice.

While she searched for words that would speak to the delight that was building inside her, Daniel Roberts limped over to the receptionist’s booth. Even with the uneven gait, his movements dazzled her. He smiled his hello. Jasmine smiled back thinking, You came. And she could have sworn that she read on his smiling lips, A deal‘s a deal.

After signing in, Daniel Roberts turned and gimped toward an empty chair. Jasmine‘s eyes slid down his back, down, down, down until they reached his behind. And, ooh, that‘s when she found some words hanging in the back of her mind. They weren‘t elegant words; they weren‘t tamed, weren‘t new, but Jasmine had no doubt they would do her feelings proud.

Her intention was to whisper the words, to take the edge off. Just whisper them to herself, but the feeling inside her heart got a hold of those uncouth, untamed, old-as-the-hills words, and shoved them out of Jasmine‘s mouth without conscience, without shame, without caring that other people were around to hear. Eyes glued to Daniel Roberts‘ behind, Jasmine blurted out, “Good Googamooga!”
