Way back in 2006, a young filmmaker named Jamelle Thomas contacted me inquiring about the film rights to my first novel, Water In A Broken Glass. In August of 2015, the spec was filmed in Baltimore. Then on September 15, 2016, film production began in Baltimore with a beautiful, talented cast: Billie Krishawn (Tonya Mimms), Candiace Dillard (Nikki St.Clair), Toni Belafonte (Satin Pierce), Wes Hall (Malcolm Holland), Victoria Rowell (Aunt Jo), Lee Avant (Robin), Shani Ashley Francillion (Meyoki), and Carlyncia Peck (Dr. Lloyd). The crew consisted of some very extraordinary folks: Jamelle Williams Writer and Director, Tekoa Smith Producer/Unit Production Manager, Stefan La Toure Producer/Editor, Victoria Miller, PhD Executive Producer, Kirby Griffin Director of Photography, Max Radbill 1st Assistant Director, Emi Sano Script Supervisor, Nakiah Ayana Costume Designer/Stylist, Autumn Meade Hair/Makeup Artist, Symora Thomas Art Director/Production Desiger, Bradley Klotz Sound Mixer/Boom, Shalaan Powell Key Grip, Andrew Wofford Gaffer, Ryan Bowens Location Manager, Precious Williams Production Design, Kyra Vasquez Assitant to the Director, JaMar Jones Sound Producer, and Production Assistants Jennifer Emerson, Billie McCain, Matt LaSalvia, and Rashad Miles.
March 1, 2018, Water In A Broken Glass premiered at the historic Senator Theater in Baltimore to a sold out crowd. Since that iconic night, Water as gone onto be featured in numerous national and internation film festivals, such as the Pan African Festival, Baltimore International Black Film Festival, CineOdyssey Film Festival, Rome Independent Prisma Film Awards, Queer Kampala Internation Film Festival, Melanin Pride Film Festival, Eko International Film Festival, Rapport Film Festival, and Reel Independent Film Extravaganza. It won Best Film at CineOdyssey Film Festival, Best Feature Film at Hollywood South Urban Film Festival, and Best Baltimore Feature at the Baltimore International Black Film Festival.
During the Pan African Film Festival in 2019, Water In A Broken Glass caught the eye of Gravitas Ventures and in July 2020, they released the film on DVD and Blu-ray. And in September 2021, Water In A Broken Glass began streaming on numerous platforms, such as Appletv, Roku, Google Play, Youtube, and Amazon Prime.
It's seems so crazy that my first novel made it all this way. I am so thankful to all the people who made this possible, but I am especially and forever thankful to God for allowing this to happen for all of us.
